The MD-90 tried to fix the MD-80's noise problem with modern engines. It worked, but the market had already moved on to the 737 and A320. Only 116 were built before Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas.
Fun fact
Delta was the last US airline to operate the MD-90, retiring them in 2020 after 27 years of service.
How to spot one
Looks like an MD-80 but slightly longer and with bigger nacelles. V2500 engines vs JT8D is the audio giveaway.

Sounds like
V2500 engines are dramatically quieter than the MD-80's JT8D — a whole different airplane
